The ONI Letter

November 24, 1963

Robert D. Steel,
Commander, USNR-R
7960 June Lake Drive,
San Diego,
California.

Perhaps you are aware that ONI has quite a file on Oswald, which no doubt has been made available on the Washington level. If not, I am certain that this information can be obtained for you through our resident special agent in charge of the Dallas office, A. C. Sullivan, who is a wonderful agent, and whom I hope you know. As a personal friend, I congratulate you, wish you continued success, and pray that your guardian angel will remain close at hand and vigilant, always.

 Robert D. Steel

  1. This is quite interesting! Bill, to you know to whom Steel addressed this letter? Apparently Steel interviewed Oswald at El Toro. Wonder where Steele was on 11/22/63? I would also love to know more about this Dallas ONI SAIC, A.C. Sullivan too. Had not heard of him before. Do you have any info on him? I wonder if he is still alive? If not when did he die and where is he buried.

  2. Yes, I will post the addressee - Steel's letter was addressed to Dallas Detective Paul Bentley, who is seen in the photo as the cigar chomping cop who arrested Oswald.

  3. Thank you so much, Bill! Of all things, i just now came across a post in a JFK FB grp about the bizarre story of one Margaret Kathryn Hoover in Martinsburg, PA who found a train ticket stub from Miami to DC dated Sep 25, 1963 and some other papers strewn under her porch which had the names of Oswald and Ruby on them. (Do you remember reading this bizarro account?) I recall reading this FBI report long ago but didn't remember the following until i re-read it: the man who shared her story with PA State Police, who then contacted the FBI, was her brother, "Robert Steel" (no final "e")! Robert D. SteelE, ONI, has a very vague and terse obit on his findagrave and no p.o.b. or history of where he had lived. I am now definitely adding him to my long list of people on which to do genealogical research! Could just be a wild coincidence...but then again...
